As tournament play gets underway in the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional Tourney at Forest Park for the 10-year old division last night, it's also important to know that the Clay Youth League will be well represented in the other age groups as well.
The CYL 10's were joined in district championships by their nine, 11 and 12-year old counterparts, which in turn propelled the teams into regional competition.
The 11-year old team defeated Riley, 6-3 and 10-7 earlier this week in district play to claim the championship and will begin tourney play this evening.
Tucker Stewart had a single and a double while both Braden White and Sam Mace both had two hits in the district championship game win.
The 11-year old regional state tourney begins with Clay County facing Newburgh tonight at 6 p.m. followed by Riley and Avon. Play continues through the weekend with a champion being crowned on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The 11-year old team is comprised of: Tanner Knust, Tucker Stewart, Sam Mace, Mitchell Howald, Liam Jones, Hunter Wolfe, Trevor Smith, Logan Ames, Seth Barrett, Landon Swearingen and Blake Mershon.
The 12-year old CYL team also took home a district title, defeating Riley twice (8-1 and 6-3) along with a win over Parke County in a tourney played at Riley.
The win propels the 12's into its own Southwest Regional Tourney, but the team must travel to Vincennes to open play on Saturday. The CYL plays the winner of a Friday game between Riley's 'A' team and the Northeast Youth League squad from Sullivan.
The CYL nine-year old team plays in the invitation state tournament in Bloomington this weekend. A roster was unavailable at press time.
