James Wallace Wheat, 82, Brazil, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Union Hospital, Terre Haute.

He was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Coxville, Ind., as the son of Elbert and Nellie Ogborn Wheat.

Following graduation from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II until his honorable discharge as a Gunner's Mate 3rd.

He was employed as a manager at Rosedale Lumber Company until his retirement.

He married Sarah Marie Targett Nov. 25, 1981.

He enjoyed euchre and bingo at the Wabash Senior Center, senior trips, USS Severn Shipmates Reunions, the Shadow Auctions and spending winters in Ft. Myers, Fla.

He was a member of the NRA, VFW, American Legion, and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. He had also enjoyed bowling, hunting, camping, fishing and the Y Senior Swim Club activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bertran, Mike and William Wheat, and sister Mary Alice Jefferies.

He is survived by wife Sarah, children Kathy and husband Jim Fagg, Sarah and husband Gary Stevenson, Wayne and wife Debbie Wheat, and Becky and husband Loy Ash, step-children Jean and husband Nelson Howell, Barbara Lucas, and Jim and wife Janie Meneely, sister Mildred Bland, sister-in-law Elsie Wheat, several nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, at Moore Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, with Pastor Doug Parkey officiating.

Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brazil Concert Band.
