As the new school season creeps ever closer, a number of area golfers have kept their skills honed over the course of the summer while playing around the state as part of the Pepsi Indiana Junior Golf Program.

Northview senior Drew Snyder has played in six tournaments as part of the tour and finished in a tie for 12th on Tuesday afternoon at Foxcliff Golf Club in Martinsville. Snyder shot a 42 on the front nine and finished with a 39 on the back. He got off to a rough start in his round, carding a seven on the par four, first hole and then bogeyed the second hole as well. However, he wrapped the first nine holes with a birdie and finished with three birdies in the round.

Several days earlier at the Vincennes Elks Golf Course, Snyder finished second with a five-over-par, 75. He started well, scoring birdies on the first two holes of the round and remained steady over the course of play to shoot a 37 on the front and a 38 on the back nine for his 75.

Snyder hasn't had much of a break from the links this summer, playing for Northview at the IHSAA State Golf Finals on June 16. Just two days later he began play on the Mountain Dew Tour at Rea Park in Terre Haute. Snyder was three strokes off the lead while placing third with a three-over-par, 75.

On June 29, Snyder traveled to Oak Meadow Golf Club where he shot an 84 to finish in a tie for eighth-place. A couple of weeks later, Snyder headed north to Lafayette and the Municipal Golf Course for a round of 81 and a seventh-place tie. On July 13 at Hawks Tail, which is the Greenfield Country Club, Snyder shot an 83 and finished in a tie for 12th overall.

Snyder isn't alone when it comes to local players competing on the tour.

Austen Bowen has competed in the 13-14 age group in four different tourney this summer.

Bowen opened play this summer on June 8 by shooting a 111 at Cascades Golf Course and placing 30th overall. Bowen also took on Fox Prairie Golf Course on July 6 and shot a 118 to finish 26th. The best finish for Bowen this summer came this week when he finished in 17th at Foxcliff.

Olivia Oehler and Mandy Thomlinson are each gearing up for the upcoming high school season beginning this fall.

Oehler has competed in five tour events and shot a 94 to finish in a tie for second at Brookshire Golf Club on Wednesday. A day earlier, Oehler shot a 98 to place 10th at Foxcliff and was seventh at the Vincennes Elks on July 17 where she shot a 100. Oehler also had a top-10 finish at Stony Creek Golf Club on July 14 where she was ninth after carding a 94. Her first tourney of the summer was on June 8 at Cascades Golf Course where she was 10th after shooting a 97.

Thomlinson, who will also be a senior this year at Northview High School, has played in four tourneys beginning with a ninth-place at Cascades Golf Club on June 8. Her round of 92 was 11 strokes off the leader, who won with an 82.

The Knight also competed at Rea Park on June 18 where she shot a 96 and finished third overall. A month later, Thomlinson added another third-place when she shot an 89 at Vincennes and this week, shot a 100 to finish in a tie for 11th at Foxcliff Golf Club.

Tourney dates continue through the rest of July before the Boys State Junior Championship begins on Aug. 3 at the Purdue Kampen Course in West Lafayette.
