He had been battling cancer for the past three years.
He was born to Herbert A. and Alta Gertrude Fiscus Stantz on May 23, 1937, in Owen County.
He graduated from Coal City High School, class of 1956.
On April 6, 1957, he married Opal Marie Bailey in her parent's home by the Rev. George Jewell.
Fred worked at Arketez Plant No. 3 and Wabash Valley Asphalt, retiring 1996.
He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, building decks and porches. He loved spending time on his front porch at home which he built.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Imogene Newport, brother Wilbur Stantz and his in-laws, Coy and Edna Bailey.
He is survived by his wife Opal, daughter Debbie Mendenhall and fiancÚ Gary Ingram, Center Point, sons Alan Stantz and Tim Stantz, Coal City, and Brad Stantz and fiancÚ Laila Narlock, Clay City, 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sister Nina Walden (ed), brother-in-law Herbert Newport, Brazil, sister and brother-in-law David and Deloris Megenhardt, Coal City, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will take place Thursday at 11 a.m., at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, with Bro. Max Slough officiating. Burial will follow at Duncan Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m., at the funeral home.
