"This year, we have 500 backpacks to give out," Director Jenny Chamberlain said. "Last year, we gave out 450 in the first two and a half hours."
The lifelong Brazil resident, has watched the need increase over the course of the six years.
"We started at Central West Village with 60 backpacks and it has grown," she said.
The giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., or until the backpacks are gone. Each backpack will contain the basics, to try and help each child be prepared for the first day.
"By just providing the students with the basics," she said. "We hope to give a break to parents."
Chamberlain said no financial proof is required only a need for the items however, recipients must live in Clay County. There will also be gently used clothing and shoes set up, for those interested on a first come first serve basis.
Without the support of the Salvation Army, the United Way, the Clay Community Foundation and area churches, the event wouldn't be possible.
"Without the help of the community, the staff and faithful volunteers this wouldn't be possible," she said. "It's really amazing to the community and churches come together."
