'Zumbathon' scheduled at YMCA

Monday, August 10, 2009

It's time to Zumba for a cause.

"It's really a lot of fun," Clay County Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary President Micah Stemm said. "A group of us participate in it at the YMCA and we thought it would be a good idea for a fundraiser."

Zumba, a world-renowned work out created by Beto Perez, combines cumbia, salsa, samba and merengue music. The combination of the music rhythms and dance steps creates an energetic workout for individuals of all ages.

The Zumbathon is scheduled for Saturday from 2:30-5:30 p.m., at the Clay County YMCA. Registration begins at 2 p.m.

Stemm says not to worry if it's your first Zumba, as there will be plenty of breaks throughout the event.

Tickets may be purchased in advance from any auxiliary member for $15 or at Riddell National Bank, tickets will be $20 at the door.

"We are raising funds to help with things such as Shop with a Cop and the canine fund for the city and county," she said. "We are also hoping to establish an officer benevolence fund to use in times such as injury or death of one of our officers."

During National Police Week, a dinner was organized for officers and their families. The officers voted for the most valuable officer in both the city and county.

The organization is working hard to support the local law enforcement.

"If there is ever any type of an accident, then we would like to be able to provide childcare and meals to the family," Stemm said. "We just want them to know that we back them and support them."

The FOP is hoping to have more fundraisers in the future and Stemm is hoping for a good turn out Saturday.

"It really will be a fun event and we are hoping to see a lot of people in the community," she said.
