The Harmony Town Council met Wednesday with an important decision to make.

"We are here to fill the shoes of Don McCollister," President Janice Gooch said.

McCollister was a member of the town council since 1999, and died July 28.

With only one letter received, the board unanimously voted in favor of Brian Mathis to represent Ward 3.

"I really appreciate the board giving me this opportunity," Mathis said. "I realize this is under bad circumstances, but I will do my best to do my part."

Mathis has lived in Harmony for 36 years. He and his wife Julianna, have been married for two years. He is employed at Bemis Company, Inc., and enjoys Harmony because of its peacefulness.

"I have lived here all my life, obviously there has always been a good crew watching and checking over things," he said. "I'm looking forward to being part of it."

With three years left on McCollister's term, Mathis has plenty of time to become accustomed to his new position, while still looking to the future.

"I would like to maintain or possibly increase the fabric of the community," he said.
