Letter to the Editor

Not in favor of 'cap and trade'

Sunday, August 23, 2009

To the Editor:

I am writing to urge Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Indianapolis) to vote against the "cap and trade" legislation that is currently pending in the Senate.

The proposed taxes on energy will negatively impact all Hoosiers, by hurting families and businesses and slowing our already troubled economy.

The legislation proposes a tax on anything that emits carbon, such as driving a car, heating your home and generating more than 50 percent of America's electricity at coal burning plants.

The point of the legislation is to help counter the negative effects of carbon emissions on our environment, which I agree with wholeheartedly.

The problem is that families are going to be asked to foot the bill at a time when we can't afford it.

This legislation will lead to an unfair tax on Hoosiers and, I urge Sen. Bayh to vote against it.

Sincerely,

John McCullough,
