Training series scheduled for fall

Thursday, August 27, 2009

Do you enjoy learning about the natural resources of our local area?

Do you find the topics of woodlands, wetlands, wildlife and natural resource conservation appealing?

Purdue Extension Vigo County and Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation and Development Council are hosting the Indiana Master Naturalist Program training series this fall at Ivy Tech Community College Wabash Valley.

The program will begin Sept. 10, from 6-9 p.m., and run for eight consecutive weeks.

The program will take place at Ivy Tech Workforce Development Center, south of Terre Haute, in room T-108. Class fee is $75 per person and covers all program costs.

The Indiana Master Naturalist Program is an introductory program of nature discovery and service learning for adults. The topics for the series will feature information on natural resources of the Wabash Valley area. Class topics will cover local soils and geology, forestry, water quality, agriculture, native plants, and wildlife. Each class will address timely issues relating to the desire to manage natural resources within a framework of sustainability. The program will also provide participants an opportunity to learn more about organizations and agencies that work within the community to promote natural resource stewardship.

To receive a certificate of completion in the Indiana Master Naturalist Program, those interested must commit a minimum of one hour of service peer hour of coursework. For the fall training series, the service would be 24 hours. The service can be completed in a variety of projects and with a variety of organizations.

Examples include assisting local parks, conservation districts, community organizations and groups seeking more education regarding natural resources. We work with each person to engage in volunteer service that is a good fit for their skill set.

The process to join the program is completing an Indiana Master Naturalist application that may be obtained from Purdue Extension Vigo County.

You may stop by the office, 275 Ohio St., Terre Haute, or call 812-462-3371, and we can mail the form to you.
