The Northview tennis team got a look at a possible sectional opponent as Linton came to visit on Wednesday evening.
The Knights came away with a 4-1 confidence-building win against the Miners.
"This was a great win against a sectional opponent," coach Mark Orr said. "Linton is a very good team. (Caleb) Mershon started a little slow winning 6-4, but then he stepped up and put his guy away. His last four serves were unbelievably hard."
Mershon downed his opponent by a 6-4, 6-2 score to get the Knights rolling at No. 1 singles and his teammates kept the momentum rolling.
Carson Kleiber grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles and Trent Sims was a 6-0, 6-1 victor at No. 3 singles.
"Carson played steady and under control his whole match," Orr said. "Trent kept his guy guessing all night. Trent worked very hard in the offseason and it shows.
The No. 1 doubles team of Joey Thomas and Caleb Andrews also came away with a win in a 7-5, 6-1 decision. Though Sam Miller and Dillon Reynolds lost a difficult, 6-4, 7-5 (10-6) match, Orr found plenty of positives to reflect on afterwards.
"Joey and Caleb were like machines out there. They beat up on Linton's two best players. They played flawless," Orr said. "I was really impressed with Sam and Dillon, Sam's volleying was as good as you can get and Dillon looked great at the net in getting many putaways. Coach (Shawn) Hughes has done a really good job getting the doubles teams where they need to be."
The Knights hit the road for their next match, taking on Greencastle on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
