June Carol Atkinson, 77, Brazil, passed away at 1:50 p.m., Sept. 2, 2009, at the Exceptional Living Center, following a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Fort Wayne, Ind. She was the daughter of Dr. Joe and Lucille Decker, Brazil.

She graduated from Brazil High School, class of 1949.

She briefly attended nursing school before taking a job with the telephone company as an operator.

Junie was married in 1952 to Robert "Bob," (Sparky) Atkinson and they spent 53 years together as man and wife. During Bob's Air Force career, they lived in San Antonio, Texas.

But in 1956, when they were going to be first-time parent, June came home to have baby Mindy in Brazil. In 1961, she gave birth to her son Brian Atkinson. Together, Bob and June raised their family in Brazil.

June was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She loved her home and family with a deep passion. She was friendly to everyone and was always willing to engage in conversation with anyone she met.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Brian and Bekki Atkinson, Brazil, grandchildren Meganne Holley, Brazil, Devin Holley, currently serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Ft. Jackson, S.C., grandson Drew Atkinson and granddaughter Lauren Atkinson, both at home attending Northview and North Clay Middle School, brother Tom Decker, Alabama, sister Linda Moreau (Don), Center Point, brother-in-law Wayne Atkinson (Kay), Terre Haute, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Joe Decker, DDS, and Lucille Laverty Decker, her husband Bob Atkinson, and her beloved daughter Melinda "Mindy" Gayle Atkinson Holley.

Services will take place Saturday at 1 p.m., at French Funeral Home, with Pastor Howard Hughes officiating. Burial will be at Clearview Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
