Alva "Max" Payne, 71, Clay City, formerly of Linton, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Linton, the son of Leroy and Dorothy (Wright) Payne.
He retired from Crane NWSC in 1992 and later worked part time for the Department of Natural Resources in Dugger, retiring in 2006. He was a United States Navy veteran.
He enjoyed any sporting event, especially those his grandchildren participated in. He attended the Cory Community Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife Beverly (Alderson) Payne, to whom he was married Aug. 30, 1975, daughters Angel (Roger) Horn, Center Point, and Carol Payne-Phelps, Linton, son Michael (Kelly) Payne, Danville, brother Melvin Payne, Linton, sisters Cheryl Shields, Linton, Vanetta Graves, Switz City, and Judy Metzger, Sullivan, and grandchildren Itasha Phelps and Kendra Szela, both of Linton, and Carli Jackson and Rhys Horn, both of Center Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jack Bough, Rex and Joe Payne.
Visitation will take place at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home, Linton, Saturday, from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, with Rev. Rick Parsons officiating. Burial will follow at Marco Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 22, Linton.
All family and friends are invited to attend a dinner at the Linton First Christian Church immediately following the burial.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital or the food pantries of Linton and Clay City, all through the funeral home.
