The Northview High School tennis squad passed its Monday test, blanking Rockville one day before facing Edgewood in a key Western Indiana Conference showdown.

Even after coming away with a 5-0 win, the NHS netters all echoed the same sentiment following Monday's victory.

"We have to stay focused," head coach Mark Orr said. "They know they've got to be focused."

The Knights surrendered only 14 games to the Rox Monday, 10 of which came in doubles play.

At No. 2 singles, junior Caleb Mershon used a powerful serve to knock off Garrett Richmond, 6-0, 6-0.

At one point in the match, Mershon rattled off a slew of aces.

"It was one of those days where (my serve) was working for me," Mershon said. "My forehand was working good today, too. We all played well."

"He hit the ball hard," Orr said of Mershon. "Attack is a good key for him."

At No. 1 singles, Northview's Carson Kleiber also knocked off Chris Baysinger, 6-0, 6-1, while Trent Sims beat Kurtis Overpeck at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.

"Trent was serving really well," Orr said of his No. 3 player.

In doubles play, Northview's No. 1 duo of Joey Thomas and Caleb Andrews defeated Lane Mahurin and Kyle Wheeler, 6-1, 6-3, while the NHS No. 2 team of Dillon Reynolds and Sam Miller beat Matt Wheeler and Pedraic Wright, 6-3, 6-3.

Orr was particularly pleased with the play of Reynolds and Miller following Monday's victory.

"They were all over the court," Orr said. "They came to play."

In junior varsity action, Northview's doubles tandem of Tyler Travis and Logan Keen knocked off Anthony Stowe and Tyler Rayborn, 8-6.

The Knights (7-2) face the Mustangs on the road beginning at 5 p.m., Tuesday.

Orr said the Knights are 2-0 against WIC foes, having already defeated Brown County and Sullivan earlier this year.

Edgewood also defeated the Knights last year, 3-2.

"Whoever wins (Tuesday) is going to win the WIC," Orr said.
