He was born Dec. 29, 1938, in Clay County, the son of George Head and Margaret Day Head. He attended Van Buren High School and then worked at Arketex as a young man. He later began working for J.I. Case, Inc., Terre Haute on the assembly line. He was transferred to East Moline, Ill., with Case and moved back to the Brazil area in March 1990 following his retirement. On May 6, 1989, he married Anne Owens Head, she survives.
Melvin was a member of the Brazil Eagles Lodge and the Brazil Moose Lodge. He enjoyed camping, yard work, playing horseshoes, pool, and euchre. He also spent time with his special "brother" Joe "Santa Claus" Adamson.
Survivors include his wife Anne Head, Brazil, children, Melvin Head, Jr. and wife Julie, Brazil, Julia Batchelor and Bill Nevins, Bridgeton, Peggy Drury, Brazil, Eleanor Ridge, Terre Haute, Mary Haney, Atlanta, Rhonda Wagner and husband Louis, Kokomo, James Freiberger and wife Joy, Richmond, and Lisa Freiberger and Beau Yakel, Brazil, 18 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers Albert Head and Walter Head, both of Brazil, and Martha Sutherlin, Brazil, many nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Hank Head, grandson Billy Head, four brothers Oscar, Wilbur, George, Jr. and Fred Head, and two sisters Katherine and Dorothy Head.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m., at French Funeral Home, with Pastor Chris Lee officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
