Benjamin "Bennie" C. Romas, 87, Cory, passed away at the home of his daughters at 11:10 a.m., Sept. 22, 2009, following an extended illness.

Bennie was born Feb. 14, 1922, to Harry M. and Emma S. (Siegelin) Romas. He graduated from Cory High School with the class of 1941. While in high school he played on the basketball team. He served his country in the United States Army from 1944-1946. While in the Army, he served in the infantry in Northern France earning the Purple Heart. After coming home he returned to work at General Housewares Stamping Mill in Terre Haute. He also farmed on his grandfather's farm which he eventually acquired. He married Helen Catherine Campbell in July 1954. Bennie loved traveling. He visited many countries and all 50 states. He enjoyed dancing and listening to country music, especially the Country Nomads.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Emma Romas, wife Helen, stepson David Halter, brother Robert Romas, brothers-in-law Andrew Betterelli and Al Uber.

He is survived by his two daughters Rita Robertson and husband Steve, Brazil, and Donna Horner and husband Terry, Cory, grandchildren: Douglas Robertson (Kim), Bryan Robertson (Heather), Monica Wallace (Brad), Brandi Horner fiancÚ Andy Sereno and Ben C. Horner, eight great-grandchildren, sisters Betty Betterelli and Berla Uber and sister-in-law Doris Romas, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Services will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel Monday Sept. 28, 2009, at 11 a.m., with Pastor John Holwerda officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Terre Haute. Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southern Care Hospice 4624 S. Springhill Junction, Terre Haute, IN 47802.
