After years of planning, the time is drawing near for the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Elementary School Building Renovation Project.

The Clay Community School Corporation and the Clay Community School Board of Trustees is encouraging the public to attend any or all of the ceremonies.

"We want to invite the public to attend to be a part of the ceremonies," Supt. Dan Schroeder said. "We know that many individuals have been following the planning process and were involved in it."

The process, which began in 2005, led to an original proposal of $53 million in August 2007. It was then cut and is now approximately $26,035,000. On Feb. 18, 2008, after numerous work sessions, the trustees voted unanimously to go ahead with the building project. After a petition remonstrance was filed on March 24, 2008, the school board moved to continue with the process and from Aug. 7-Sept. 8, 2008, residents were asked to pick a side regarding the issue.

On Oct. 17, 2008, there were 2,480 qualified signatures in favor of the project and 521 qualified petition signatures against the project in Clay County. Qualified signatures in Parke County were 16 for the project, and none against.

On Nov. 14, 2008, in a 5-1 vote with board member Forest Buell opposing and Dottie King not in attendance, the board moved to go ahead with the construction timeline and the authorization of the construction team to proceed with schematic designs of all projects.

"The groundbreaking ceremonies will formally begin the actual construction process which is exciting and will culminate in facilities that students, employees, and community members will be proud of for many years that follow," Schroeder said.

Though details are still being finalized, selected students from the elementary schools that are having the renovation, will be given the honor of assisting with the ground-breaking, and all students will be given bubbles to commemorate the ceremony.

Each school will have a separate ceremony. The location, times, and dates are:

* Staunton Elementary, 9 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30,

* Meridian Elementary, 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30,

* East Side Elementary, 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30,

* Van Buren Elementary, 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 1,

* Forest Park Elementary, 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 1 and

School administrators are reminding patrons to register with the office of the school before the ceremony begins.
