CLAY CITY -- The Clay City Eels took on the top area cross country teams and two of the top in the state on Thursday evening.
The third-ranked Patriot boys and the 13th-ranked girls visited Clay City for a dual meet with Terre Haute North coming out on top in both meets.
In the boys' meet, North gave its top-six runners a break and put members of its junior varsity into the lineup against the Eels and came away with a 21 to 40 victory.
John Davis won the meet for the Patriots, racing to a time of 17:12 to edge out the Eels' Parker Modesitt, who ran a 17:33. Jesse Vansickle was fifth for Clay City in 17:59 and Conner Modesitt was 10th in 18:39. In 14th-place was Ben Denker in 19:55 followed by Austin Sinders in 16th in 20:09. Wayne Tharp was 19th in 21:51, Landry Moss placed 21st in 22:32 and Adam Sumner took 22nd in 25:56.
In the girls meet, Katie Shew took the top spot for the Patriots in 22:04 as North competed against an incomplete Eels' team.
Tiffani Goodman was the top finisher for Clay City in 12th with a time of 24:32. Kaleigh Decker took 18th in 28:22 and Ashley Sumner was 20th in 29:26. The Eels' Nutchaya Thongthanee was 22nd in 30:53.
Clay City will compete on Tuesday at the SWIAC meet on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
