Best of Thymes Club
Twenty-three members of The Best of Thymes Club met the evening of Sept. 24, in the home of Jeanne McMichael. Pumpkins, gourds and various fall accents welcomed the women for the carry-in and programs.
Charlene Miller gave the table grace before members filled their plates, found a place at the tables and enjoyed laughter and food with their fellow gardeners.
After the meal President Peggy Potts opened the business meeting by asking the ladies if any area events or programs needed to be highlighted. Included were: The Wabash Valley Audubon Society has scheduled a Wabashiki State Fish & Wildlife program at 7 p.m., Oct. 21, in Room C of the Vigo County Public Library; Pumpkin Patch Festival near Arthur, Ill., is open until Oct. 31; Fish Fry, Oct. 16, at the R.E.E.M. Center.
The Christmas party committee members are Claralou Thompson, Laura Kennedy and Nancy Cox. A report will be made at the next meeting.
Pat Wilkinson made a report on asters, the Flower of the Month. She said the fall flower is best planted in full sun, but would tolerate part shade. The plant needs moisture, but do not let it sit in water. Asters usually bloom mid-August to mid September. Cut back to the ground over winter or once the flowering season has passed. They may be divided in spring or fall.
Karen Staub demonstrated how to press flowers for framing. She passed around several examples of her art work. Karen said to hang the flower art on a north facing wall so it doesn't fade due to a lot of sunlight. She said there are different ways of drying or pressing, but the faster something dries, the better it stays the true color. Karen said to keep the flowers pressed for about two weeks before assembling the picture on acid-free paper.
The ladies will gather again Oct. 29, at the home of Beth Meuser for the annual Soup Night.
The hostess received a gift. Door prizes were won by Pat Deakins, Charlene Miller and Carol Swearingen.
Others attending were: Sue Thompson, Roxie Cunningham, Sipriana Bussing, Ruth Timm, Carolyn Peggy, Jean Rowings, Lois Lawson, Sindy Phillips, Carolyn Trout, Rose Marie Weber, Beth Meuser and Pat Krider.
