TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview girls' soccer team saw its season come to an end during the Terre Haute South sectional, dropping a 4-1 decision to Sullivan on a dreary, chilly Thursday evening.

On what would become an unfortunate theme for the Knights, they fell behind early when Caryssa West slid a shot past Northview goalie Shalee Hathaway, giving the Golden Arrows a 1-0 just over 10 minutes into the first period.

After struggling to find much offensive momentum for most of the period, the Knights took advantage of a wide open look, when Hannah Pond, playing in what would be her final soccer game at Northview, scored off a corner kick, tying the game at one. The Knights dodged a bullet in the final 20 seconds of the period, when Sullivan's Hannah McPhail's open shot bounced off the cross bar, resulting in a 1-1 tie at halftime.

Unfortunately for Northview, the good fortune that ended the first period didn't carry over into the game's second frame. Six minutes in, West impressively weaved through Northview defenders for her second goal of the night. Then, with 18 minutes to go, she completed a hat trick, which seemingly broke the Knights' spirit, putting them in a 3-1 hole.

Five minutes later, Kelsey Burr added an insurance goal, which resulted in the game's final 4-1 score.

Despite the loss, first year coach Ahnya Alstott, said she was pleased with the effort displayed by her players both in Thursdays game, and throughout the season.

"The girls did everything I asked them to do all season," said Alstott, who was visibly emotional at the games conclusion. "It was a great experience."

Alstott then gave special mention to the effort of her five departing seniors. Players embarking on their final games at Northview included Pond, Carlee Bell, Breana Fagg, Jessie Moore and Ashleigh Lehr.

The Knights finished the 2009 season with a 7-9 record. Alstott said her primary goal coming into the season was for the Knights to win their third consecutive WIC title. And while they failed to reach that goal, she said she was still mostly satisfied with the strides her team made as the season went along.

But despite feeling some satisfaction with her neophyte campaign, Alstott said she fully expected to see more specific goals reached next season. The Knights will be returning various players, including 16 juniors who the coach said she was fully anticipating having back. With such experience, Alstott said she expected the experience of her players to play a major role in increased on the field success."

"I want to win conference next season," Alstott stated bluntly. "We have a lot of girls who were around when we did it last year, and they remember what it's like. I'm counting on that experience to help us improve next season.
