Runners descend upon Eagle Park this morning for the Brown County Regional. Feeding into that regional are teams from Terre Haute and the Brown County Sectional. Terre Haute North's boys and girls won their sectional and are expected to challenge for a regional crown as well.
The Northview boys and girls teams are also running this morning along with the Clay City boys' team.
Several of the area teams have plenty of experience on the regional course after having competed in the Eagle Classic on Sept. 12.
In that meet, Terre Haute North was led by John Mascari's winning time of 15:30 at the Eagle Classic and was second in the team standings to Columbus North. The Patriot girls were third in the team standings as Columbus North was also the winner, followed by a potent Bloomington South team.
In the girls' race at the Eagle Classic, Chanli Mundy was the winner in 18:44 and should renew a budding rivalry with Bloomington South standout, Anna Voskuil, who was second in 18:50. The Patriots and Panthers tied for second in the team battle at the Eagle Classic.
Northview's Alyssa Conrad placed 55th to lead the Knights with a time of 21:19.
In last year's regional at Eagle Park, Mascari finished second in a time of 15:45 and the Patriots were team champions.
Northview's Conor Strain placed eighth in the regional last year with a time of 16:26 with Tanner Brown in 59th with a time of 18:30. Ryan South placed 73rd in a time of 21:25.
For Clay City, Parker Modesitt was the top finisher in 27th and returns for another crack at the Brown County course. He finished in 17:05 last season. Teammate, Jesse Vansickle is also back and placed 49th in 17:56 to edge out Conner Modesitt in 60th with a time of 18:34. Ben Denker took 64th in last year's regional and Austin Sinders was 69th in 19:32.
Bloomington South was the team champion in last year's girls' regional, followed by Bloomington North and Terre Haute North.
The Knights' top returning runner is Alyssa Conrad, who placed 33rd in 21:27 last year. Shelby Sands was 40th and should be able to return from injury after missing the sectional. Corey Laue took 42nd and Nicole Nelson was 47th.
The winning sectional times at Terre Haute's LaVern Gibson Championship Course, site of the state finals, belonged to Terre Haute North's John Mascari (16:09.0) and Chanli Mundy (18:40.0). The winning sectional times at Brown County Tuesday went to Martinsville's Jace Lowry (16:06.94) and South's Nicole Lucas (19:05.2).
Conditions are likely to be a bit soggy, much like the sectional run on the same course. With some rain falling on Friday, maintaining footing during the race will be important for runners.
The boys' race begins at 10:30 a.m.
