County bands set for Saturday

Both the Northview Marching Knights and Clay City Imperial Regiment are just one step away from making it to the 2009 Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Finals.

Both bands will compete in ISSMA semistate action Saturday, with Northview traveling to Pike High School and Clay City heading to Franklin Community High School.

The Marching Knights are one of 20 bands set to compete at Pike Saturday. Northview is scheduled to perform at 3:10 p.m.

Other Class B bands scheduled to perform at Pike Saturday include Whiteland (1 p.m.), New Palestine (1:13 p.m.), Plainfield (1:26 p.m.), Greenwood (1:39 p.m.), Zionsville (1:52 p.m.), Westfield (2:05 p.m.), Mt. Vernon (2:18 p.m.), Jasper (2:57 p.m.), Northview, Greenfield-Central (3:36 p.m.), Bloomington North (3:49 p.m.), Floyd Central (4:02 p.m.), New Castle Chrysler (4:15 p.m.), Concord (4:54 p.m.), Northridge (5:07 p.m.), F.J. Reitz (5:20 p.m.), DeKalb (5:33 p.m.), Evansville Central (5:46 p.m.), and East Noble (5:59 p.m.)

Class B awards will immediately follow. The top five bands in the southern Class B contest will advance to the finals.

In addition to Northview, Greenwood, Jasper, North Side, Plainfield, DeKalb, Concord, New Castle Chrysler, Bloomington North and Northridge all made the 2008 ISSMA State Finals.

The Marching Knights' 2009 show is titled "Vs." The Knights have seven state titles and have made the state finals 22 straight years.

The Imperial Regiment is scheduled to lead off Class D competition at Franklin Community Saturday. Clay City will take the field at 1 p.m.

Other Class D bands participating include Blue River Valley (1:13 p.m.), Morristown (1:26 p.m.), Elwood Community (1:39 p.m.), Triton Central (1:52 p.m.), Monrovia (2:05 p.m.), Eastern (Greentown) (2:18 p.m.), Forest Park (2:57 p.m.), Springs Valley (3:10 p.m.), Bluffton (3:36 p.m.), Orleans (3:49 p.m.), Lewis Cass (3:49 p.m.), Adams Central (4:02 p.m.), Paoli (4:15 p.m.), Tell City (4:54 p.m.), Eastside (5:07 p.m.), North Posey (5:20 p.m.), Woodland (5:33 p.m.), South Spencer (5:46 p.m.), and Southridge (5:59 p.m.).

The 2009 Imperial Regiment show is titled "Another Man's Treasure." After a three-year absence, Clay City advanced to the state finals last year and own five Class D state titles, the last of which took place in 1994.

The 2009 ISSMA State Finals are scheduled to take place Saturday, Oct. 31, at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis.

How to get there from here

The following are directions for both Pike High School and Franklin Community High School:

Pike High School

Take Interstate-70 east toward Indianapolis. Take exit 73B to merge onto I-465 N/I-74 west. Continue to follow I-465 north. Then take the exit toward west 71st Street. Keep left at the fork to continue toward west 71st Street. Turn right at west 71st Street and the school -- located at 5401 W. 71st St., Indianapolis -- is on the right.

Franklin Community High School

Take I-70 east toward Indianapolis. Then take exit 69 to merge onto I-65 south toward Louisville. Take exit 95 toward Whiteland. Then turn right at East 500 North/County Road 500 North (Whiteland Road). Then turn left at South Sawmill Road and continue on north Centerline Road. Turn right to stay on north Centerline Road. Then take the first left onto East 200 North and the school -- located at 625 Grizzly Cub Dr., Franklin -- is there.
