Hundreds of area fifth-graders marched from the YMCA of Clay County east on United States 40 to the Clay County Courthouse Tuesday morning in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

As the students stood on the courthouse lawn, they watched as Clay County Superior Court Judge J. Blaine Akers and Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton presented both the Clay City and Northview Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapters with $500 donations.

From there, Clay County Circuit Court Judge Joe Trout read a proclamation declaring this week as Red Ribbon Week.

Clay City and Northview SADD members then handed all the fifth-graders balloons, which the students launched into the sky.

The students then split into groups and spent the afternoon touring different locations. They were set for a tour of the Clay County Justice Center and Clay County Circuit Court in addition to participating in activities on the courthouse lawn put together by the two SADD chapters. The students were also scheduled to hear speakers from Cumberland Academy who planned to share experiences.
