The following is a list of upcoming events provided to The Brazil Times:

Volunteers Needed

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers for the upcoming holiday season Kettle Drive.

Those interested are urged to contact 448-8700 for open times and dates or e-mail asterret@olivet.edu.

The Kettle Drive will take place Nov. 22-Dec. 26.

Leaf pickup

The City of Brazil has scheduled four leaf pickup dates for different areas in the city.

The dates are scheduled in November and include:

* Today through Friday -- The northeast section,

* Nov. 9-13 -- The southeast section,

* Nov. 16-20 -- The southwest section, and

* Nov. 23-30 -- The northwest section.

After Nov. 30, residents will need to bag their leaves and city employees will come by and pick them up as they are called. Those interested should notify the city garage of any bags that need to be picked up by calling 448-8501.

Meeting set

The Clay County Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m., today, in the lower level of the museum.

This is the annual Thanksgiving meeting. In honor of Veteran's Day, the guest speaker will be Hal Johnston, a veteran of 24 years of military service.

The Brazil Water Office will be closed Wednesday due to training.

Payments may be accepted in the drop off box, located downstairs outside the Brazil Police Department.

Aquatic fitness

Fun Time Fitness and Aquatics will offer a free workshop, "Aquatic Circuit Training," at 6 p.m., Wednesday.

The workshop will allow participants of any fitness level to burn calories, increase flexibility, tone muscles and increase strength.

Workout stations, equipment and illustrations will be located around the parameter of the pool, providing participants the opportunity to try out a variety of aquatic exercise moves. Participants may choose to workout in the shallow water and/or deep water stations. Observing on deck is also an option.

The workshop will be taught by certified aquatic fitness instructor Joanna Connors.

The workshop is free and open to all adults. No swimming skills are required and hair does not get wet.

Basket Bingo

The Northview Knights sports boosters will have a Longaberger Basket Bingo Thursday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and bingo begins at 6:30.

Tickets are $15 in advance from any sports booster officer, fall athletic family or by contacting the Northview High School Athletic Department at 448-2661.

Tickets will be $20 the night of the event. There will also be intermission games, a basket raffle, door prices and full meal concessions.

Meeting set

Clay County Friends of the Wabash Valley Right to Life group will conduct its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, in the meeting room at the Brazil Public Library.

Anyone interested in joining the organization is welcome to attend.

Chili Supper

The Clay County YMCA and Silver Sneakers will sponsor a chili supper from 4:30-7 p.m., Friday, in the YMCA Community Room.

Cost is $3 for each bowl of chili for adults and children.

Hot dogs, chili dogs and desserts will also be available for an additional charge.

Carry out will be available.

Tickets will be sold at the door or from any Silver Sneaker member.

Christmas Auction

Christmas In The Park will host a silent/live Christmas auction, from 4-9 p.m., Saturday, at the V.F.W. Post 1127, located on South Depot Street.

Dinner will start at 4:30 p.m. Desserts will also be available.

The live auction will start at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $8 per person.

Wanted: Vendors

Vendors are needed for Beta Sigma Phi's annual Holiday Bazaar.

The event is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, at Linton High School.

Fish Fry!

Harmony United Methodist Church, 10195 N. Vine St., Harmony, will conduct a Jonah Fish Fry, from noon-3 p.m., Sunday.

Chili Cook Off

The American Legion Riders will conduct their annual chili cook off Sunday.

The event will take place at the American Legion Post 2, 1015 Forest Ave., Brazil. Registration is scheduled for noon-12:30 p.m. Judging will then take place.

Judges include Iraqi war veteran Philip Anderson, WTHI News 10 meteorologist David Wire and Brazil Mayor Ann Bradshaw.

Anyone in the community is invited to participate in the cook off. Entry fee is $5.

The winner will receive a cash prize, to be determined based on the amount of chili entered.

Dyslexia film set

The Brazil Public Library will host a film on Dyslexia, Monday, Nov. 9.

Schum will share her experience growing up wit Dyslexia.

In addition, a film will be shown regarding a man who kept his family from knowing he could not read.

The film will take place from 6-7 p.m.

Vet cuts

Stadler's Barbershop, 1919 Maple Ave., Terre Haute, will be giving free haircuts to all veterans on Veteran's Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Those who walk in with proof of military service or in uniform are eligible from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., on that day.


The Cory Zion Church will conduct its 26th Turkey Supper Saturday, Nov. 14, from 4-8 p.m.

Cost for the dinner will be a freewill offering. There will be delivery service available for the Cory, Clay City, Center Point, Saline and Riley areas.

The church is located three miles south of Cory from State Road 46 or three miles west of SR 59.

Build a snowman!

Make a pot lid snowman at the Brazil Public Library.

Those interested are invited to the workshop at 6 p.m., Nov. 19, where painting and decorating of a pot lit winter decoration will take place.

Cost for the event is $5. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required and space is limited.

Bottle Show

The Wabash Valley Antique Bottle and Pottery Club will present the 12th Illiana Antique Bottle and Pottery Show and Sale Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Shadow Auction Barn, 1517 Maple Ave., Terre Haute.

Show hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and admission is free with early admission of $10 at 7 a.m.

The organization will conduct a special event this year, the Historical Bottle Auction, Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m.
