Students at Van Buren Elementary are giving back to the community.

The student council recently sponsored a food drive to benefit a food pantry in Harmony and the students donated in force.

Approximately 400 cans were collected throughout the week and the student council sponsors were impressed with the turn out.

"The students were willing to help," sponsor Jaime Bailey said. "Everyone pulled together."

This is the first time the collection has gone to a food pantry in Harmony and they were appreciative of the help.

"The food will provide our Thanksgiving food baskets to several families," food pantry representative Kathy Price said.

"Student council tries to do things not only for the school, but the community as well," Bailey added. "This was a way for to not only help our students but everyone."
