Committee conducting food drive at parade

Friday, November 20, 2009

An idea to help those in need within Clay County sprung out of a meeting that took place Nov. 11.

The Christmas In The Park committee met that evening and decided they wanted to add something to the annual parade, which is scheduled to take place Friday, Nov. 27.

Those who will be attending the parade are asked to bring canned goods, dried goods, baby food and more to the event for a food drive the committee has scheduled.

This is the first year the committee has scheduled such a food drive.

"There are so many people out of work and so many people out there that need help," Christmas In The Park committee member Linda Ray said. "So many people go to the parade that we just thought it would be a great time to make this an event."

All of the collected food will be distributed to local food pantries.

Ray said the food drive will take place prior to the actual parade, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and is sponsored by Lynn's Pharmacy.

Ray said four trucks will take part in collecting the donated food, with two being at the start of the parade route (Vandalia Street) and two more at the conclusion of the route (Depot Street).

She said the trucks will converge near the middle of the route, with committee members scouring the crowd picking up the donations.

She added the donated food would be distributed to local food pantries the first week of December.

"We just thought it was a good thing to do," Ray said.

In addition, she said containers will be on display at the Clay County Courthouse prior to the parade for people to drop off donated food.
