With the holiday season quickly approaching, students are hoping to help those in need within their own school.

North Clay Middle School students recently concluded a week-long food drive sponsored by the student council.

The middle school students donated a total of 1,279 non-perishable food items this year, which will be used be used to make Thanksgiving baskets for families in need with students who attend North Clay.

"We can usually provide for 20 families at Thanksgiving and again at Christmas," student council sponsor Sheri Yocom said. "The student council buys a turkey for each basket."

To help entice students a contest was created amongst the teams. The winner was the Noble Team and they will be receiving a pizza party.

"Our numbers are down from last year," Yocom said. "I'm still impressed with the amount especially because of the state of the economy."

One student also receives recognition for bringing in the most cans, Ayrten Kiger, cleaned out the cabinets for a good cause. He donated the most with 68 cans.

"The student council sponsors do a wonderful job organizing this annual event," Principal Jeff Allen said. "Our students responded very well to this wonderful cause."
