She was born March 8, 1923, in Terre Haute, to Charles Franklin Stedman and Sylvia Esta Apple Stedman.
Ruth was retired from Charles Todd Uniform Company. She was very proud of her GED that she received at the age of 52. She completed classes in office machines at North Vigo High School.
She loved reading and puzzles, she collected old books, and she was a loving and caring wife and mother.
She is survived by sons John and wife Freda Mattox, Roopville, Ga., David Mattox, West Terre Haute, and Daniel and wife Emily Mattox, Brazil, daughters Mary and husband Ed Noble, Terre Haute, Naomi and husband Richard Price, West Terre Haute, Connie and husband Jack Cotton, Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Carol and husband Gary Lawson, Carrie, Miss., sister Virginia Duncan, grandchildren Ruth, Emile, Donna, Shiela, Victoria, Misty, Angela, April, Lacy, Chad, Christopher, Holly, John, Jennifer, Julie, Angel, Alvin, Mathew, and Danielle, several great-grandchildren, and special niece Diana Dwyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Mattox Sr., sons William Mattox Jr., and Roger Mattox, sisters Rosemary Wright, Marie Snavely, Ada Bruce, and Doris Shephard, brothers Robert Stedman, and Donald Stedman, and great-grandchild Roger Mattox Jr., who was lost in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Mattox Wood Funeral Home, with Rev. John Wayne Mattox Jr. officiating.
Visitation will be one hour before service Tuesday. Burial will be at Bethesda Cemetery.
