He was born Sept. 9, 1927, to Clifford and Nelle (McCullough) Elwell.
Rex attended Staunton High School and later joined the United States Navy. He served his country from June 1945 until being honorably discharged in August 1946.
When he returned home from the military, he began hauling powder concrete for Schwerman Trucking in Greencastle, where he worked until retiring.
He married Betty Louise Williams March 24, 1951.
Rex was a member of the Teamsters Union 144, American Legion Post 2, and V.F.W. Post 1127.
In his younger years, he and his wife Betty were very active in Go Cart Racing and were instrumental in constructing the go cart track at Forest Park in Brazil. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, mushroom hunting and go cart racing.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Elwell, brother Bill Elwell and sister Pat Ward.
Survivors include daughters Rexanne Laue (Jerry), Brazil, and Karen Sue "Suzie" O'Boyle, Fort Wayne, grandchildren Autumn Sheese (Zach), Brandon Sneath, Cari Laue, Corey Laue, Patrick O'Boyle, John Paul O'Boyle, Casey O'Boyle, and Thomas O'Boyle, great-grandson Macalister Sheese, and brother Ted Elwell (Peggy), Carbon.
Graveside services will be at Clearview Cemetery Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at 3 p.m., with his son-in-law Jerry Laue officiating. A military tribute will be provided by members of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as members of the United States Navy.
