Naomi Ruth Crooks, 81, rural Rockville, passed on to eternal life Dec. 22, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.
Born April 15, 1928, in Parke County, she was the daughter of Lonnie Back and Beulah (Lightle) Back.
After graduating in 1946 from Greene Twp. High School, she was a telephone operator for Indiana Bell Telephone Company for several years. She also worked for many years in the Parke County Auditor's Office.
On Dec. 3, 1948, Naomi married John D. Crooks. He preceded her in death in 1997.
To this union was born two sons, Gregory Joseph (Jane) Crooks and Jon David (Gina) Crooks. They survive, along with five beloved grandchildren, Brock Crooks, twins Ross and Cody Crooks, Matthew Crooks and Tara Crooks. Also surviving is her sister Anita (Bob) Stephenson, Indianapolis, and brother Loren Back, Brazil, and a host of many good friends and an extended family.
She was also preceded in death by sisters Lucille Griffin and Alma Walker, and brother Lloyd Back.
Naomi was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church. She enjoyed helping decorate for special occasions, often making the wreaths for the Easter and Christmas seasons.
Naomi loved all that is Indiana, mushroom hunting, IU basketball and watching the Indy 500 with her grandkids. Besides her dogs, cooking and gardening, her community, was important to her. After surviving cancer herself, she helped organize the Marathon Walk for Cancer, held annually at the Parke County 4-H grounds.
She belonged to the Elks Club, Ladies of the Lake Club, Greene Twp. Alumni Association, where she helped plan, raise money and erect the Memorial, listing all graduates of the school.
Services will take place at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Butler Funeral Home, with Pastor J. Daeschner officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in Butler Funeral Home.
