Personnel with the Brazil Fire Department battled a house fire early Monday morning.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 620 N. Walnut St., Brazil, for a house fire.

Upon arrival, the attic of the home was fully engulfed in flames.

"The fire was contained to the attic," BFD Chief Jim Smith told The Brazil Times.

The home is occupied by Dan Barnett, whom, according to Smith, was on some type of rent-to-own contract with homeowners Jim and Penny Hill.

Smith said Barnett was not injured in the blaze.

"He seems to be fine," Smith said.

Smith said the hottest area of the fire was on the south side of the home. He added the neighboring home to the south sustained some damage to the siding.

Smith said weather conditions caused havoc for department personnel.

"It took a little while for us to get additional personnel on the scene," he said.

Smith said the home was a total loss as the ceilings fell through.

"All of the stuff inside was all a loss," he said.

He said the fire was still under investigation, although he suspected the cause was electrical.

The Wabash Valley Red Cross Chapter has already contacted Barnett, Smith said.

Also assisting were the Brazil City Police Department, TransCare, Duke Energy, Vectren and the Brazil Street Department. In addition, Smith said the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department was on standby.
