GREENCASTLE -- In the consolation game of the South Putnam Holiday Classic, Clay City fought hard in the second half, but couldn't overcome North Vermillion's lead they built in the first 16 minutes of the game and fell to 3-5 on the season.

The Eels seized a quick first quarter lead, but watched as North Vermillion rallied back to take the 23-16 advantage after one quarter. The Falcons extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Clay City 19-14 in the frame and entered the half with a 42-30 lead.

If North Vermillion had thoughts they were on the easy track for a win, the Eels put those thoughts to bed in the first few minutes of the second half.

Clay City's Tyler Bridgewater came out on fire in the quarter and put up six quick points to help the Eels trim the Falcon's lead to three points at 44-41. The Eels kept it close for the remainder of the third and trailed by five at 54-49 going into the fourth quarter.

In the final stanza, free throws made all the difference. North Vermillion was able to convert 15-of-20 at the line, while the Eels were only able to make 4--of-11.

Clay City was able to keep it close, outscoring the Falcons 25-24 in the fourth, but was unable to make a final push to go for the win.

Logan Higgins led the Eels with 20 points, followed by D.J. Newton with 16 and Bridgewater with 13. Ben Denker chipped in 12 points, with Matt Moore adding eight, Jake Tiefel three and Nick Johnson two.

Clay City (3-5) will compete in the Greene County Invitational on Jan. 5. They'll take on Eastern Greene in game two at 7:30 p.m.
