Seminars set for Estate and Family Business Transfer Planning

Friday, January 1, 2010

Two programs to help individuals, farmers, landowners and family businesses understand and make plans for the transfer of property interest have been scheduled by the Daviess County Purdue Extension Service at Gasthof Restaurant and Baker, CR 650 E, one mile north of United States 50, in Montgomery, Ind., for Jan. 14, and Sullivan County Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service at the Sullivan County 4-H Fairgrounds, Sullivan, Jan. 15.

Estate and Family Business Transfer Planning includes many estate and business transfer topics. Gerry Harrison, Farm Management Extension and Ag lawyer, will present the information and take questions. Gerry remains at the forefront of Purdue Extension Estate and Family Business Transfer Planning education for more than 35 years. Jeff Hawkins, Attorney, Sullivan, an Indiana Estate Planning Specialist, will assist at Sullivan with the presentation.

This program will include basic and complex implications of various property ownership arrangements for estate and tax planning and transfer. Harrison will discuss methods of avoiding probate, including beneficiary designation, joint ownership, gifts, trusts and remainder interests. Jeff Hawkins will cover living wills, health care authority, wills, being without at a will as well as Medicaid issues. Implications of income, gift and estate and Indiana inheritance tax will be discussed as well as business organization choices.

Emphasis is on helping understand tax minimization and how to completely avoid federal estate tax by following the law, with the use of charitable transfers, including farm land conservation easements.

Five hours of continuing education credits are available for Indiana lawyers, accountants and insurance producers.

Pre-registration is required with a small fee. Registration via the Sullivan County Extension Office. Deadline to receive registration is Jan. 12.
