SWITZ CITY -- The Clay City Eels are struggling defensively and it's showing in the loss column.
The Eels gave up 65 or more points for the fourth time over the last six games, all of them losses and Clay City fell 78 to 55 to North Central (Farmersburg) in the early game Saturday at the Greene County Tournament.
Clay City has now lost six straight games after winning three of its first four contests. On Saturday afternoon, North Central got off to a good start as Ethan Stanifer scored nine points for the Thunderbirds, who led 19-14 after the first quarter. The second period was even more potent for North Central as Clay City was outscored 22-9 to build a 41-23 lead at halftime.
The Thunderbirds outscored the Eels in each of the four quarters on the way to the lopsided victory.
D.J. Newton topped Clay City with 15 points followed by 10 from Logan Higgins and nine for A.J. Evans.
North Central was led by Stanifer with 14 points followed by Jordan Stefancik and Bobby Swaby, each with 12 points.
In the other consolation bracket game, Linton held off a late rally by Union to score a 61-51 victory.
The Miners built a 49-26 lead after three quarters and then held off a fourth quarter barrage by the Bulldogs who rang up a 25-12 advantage in the final period.
Tyler Talpas was the leading scorer for Union with 21 points and Linton got 14 from Chase Rhoten and 10 from Tim Scott.
In the winner's bracket games, the Shakamak Lakers carried over their strong play in the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Tourney with another victory in the Greene County Tourney. After holding off North Central in double-overtime on Tuesday night, the Lakers got a dominating third quarter from Billy Newton and 6'7 sophomore, Justin Crody. The pair combined for 17 points as Shakamak had a 20-8 advantage in the period on the way to a 57-51 victory over the T-Birds.
J.T. Yoho led the way for Eastern with 17 points and Newton topped the Lakers with 15 points.
In the other semifinal game, Vincennes Rivet knocked White River Valley from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 51-47 win. The Patriots outscored the Wolverines 18-8 in the final quarter and got 23 points from Kendall Vieke, Jared Shelton led the Wolverines with 11 points.
The wins by the Lakers and Patriots set up a title-game rematch this evening as the 8-2 Lakers take on the 6-4 Patriots. Clay City's next game is on the road at Eastern on Friday night.
