Sisters of Providence sets up youth art contest

Thursday, January 28, 2010

WEST TERRE HAUTE -- The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods have announced that entries for its fourth annual Youth Art Contest are open.

The theme for this year's contest is "Saint Mother Theodore Guerin -- Indiana Pioneer."

The contest is open to youths age 5-18 who reside in Vigo, Parke, Vermillion, Clay and Sullivan counties in Indiana and Clark, Edgar and Crawford counties in Illinois.

First- through third-place winners will receive cash prizes courtesy of Terre Haute Savings Bank, and ribbons and certificates from Sisters of Providence.

Honorable mention recipients in the four categories will receive a ribbon and certificate.

Each artist who enters the contest will receive a Certificate of Participation.

A reception for all entrants and winners is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., March 4, in O'Shaughnessy Dining Room in Providence Center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

To enter, each young artist is asked to use his/her imagination and creativity to depict, via artwork, how Saint Mother Theodore exemplified the pioneer spirit.

Youth art contest participants are asked to submit "flat" artwork, such as a painting or perhaps a pencil, ink or charcoal sketch. Sculpture, photography and/or digital media will not be accepted.

Only one entry per artist may be entered. Projects may be no larger than 11-by-17 inches.

Each entry must be mounted either on foam board or cardboard and ready for display.

An official entry form must be completed in its entirety and be displayed on the back of the artwork in the lower right corner.

The artwork must be an original work created in 2010 and registered for the contest by using the official entry form, which can be accessed online at www.SistersofProvidence.org.

All entries become the property of the Sisters of Providence and will not be returned.

By entering the contest, permission is given to the Sisters of Providence to reproduce the entry, including the artist's name and hometown.

The deadline for submission is Feb. 19. Entries may be dropped off between 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Providence Center reception desk at the college. Entries may be mailed, but must be postmarked by Feb. 19. Mail entries to Becky Igo, Office of Congregational Advancement, Owens Hall, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., 47876.

For more information about the contest, call Igo at 812-535-2813 or e-mail bigo@spsmw.org.
