Just one year removed from a disappointing sixth-place team finish at the wrestling sectional, the Northview Knights bounced back in a big way.
The Northview wrestling room will be plenty busy over the next week after the Knights moved nine wrestlers onto the Bloomington South Regional next weekend and captured second-place as a team behind repeat champions, Bloomington South.
"A second-place finish is a nice improvement from last year," Northview coach Dan Mikesell said. "I'm really proud of our kids, nine guys moving on I think is the most of any team in this area so I'm proud of that."
Beau Judd was crowned as the sectional champion at 285 pounds after he blanked West Vigo's Nick Brownfield in the final, 5-0. Judd scored a first period takedown, which ended up being enough, but added an escape and another takedown in the third period for the victory. Brownfield was a familiar opponent for Judd, who had faced the Viking in three previous matches this season. After the win, Mikesell commented on how hard work and practice had gotten Judd to the top of the podium.
"To be a sectional champion is pretty special, he worked pretty hard in the off-season and he did a lot of traveling, a lot of wrestling all over the state of Indiana," Mikesell said. "So he worked pretty hard to get (the championship), he deserves it. He earned it today. He's distanced himself a little from the West Vigo kid, that's the fourth time he's wrestled him. We lost to him the first time and I think he's won by a little more each time since."
The Knights also got a runner-up finish from Skyler Hall at 112 pounds as the junior won his only match of the day via fall before forfeiting the title match with an injury. Hall defeated Bloomington North's Sam Summitt in the semi-final. Bloomington South's Jacob Boosma won the title to improve to 28-5 on the season.
Caleb Nicosin lost Bloomington North's Ethan Wampler, 5-2, in the semi-final and then came back to win his next two matches via fall to receive third-place and a regional berth. The same can be said of 119-pounder, Austin Bell, who fell to Bloomington South's Dru Spires, 5-1, in the semi and then came back to drop Terre Haute North's Adrian Alexander and Sullivan's Colt Thompson by fall for third.
In the 135-pound division, senior Luke Pingleton, lost just his second match of the season when he fell to Terre Haute South's Jordan Jensen, 11-5, in the semi-final before pinning Jacob Creasey of West Vigo and winning by tech. fall over Adam Joraanstad of Bloomington North.
Brandon Pleake will also be a regional qualifier after a third-place at 189 pounds after he won 12-2 over Blake Ray of West Vigo to claim the spot.
Though Mikesell believed his team might have another wrestler or two reach the finals, he was pleased at how most of them responded following a loss.
"(We had) one champion and one runner-up, I'm a little disappointed with some of our semifinal matches, but those guys bounced back for the most part to get third-place," Mikesell said.
Also advancing for the Knights will be Aaron See in the 215-pound class and Larry Shaffer at 152.
Bloomington South claimed the team title with six individual championships.
After the sectional, Mikesell was happy with how is team stacked up against the competition.
"A second-place finish is a good accomplishment to finish ahead of all the teams in the area," Mikesell said. "Bloomington South is just at a little bit of a different level than everybody right now, but I think we can close the gap on them next year and give them a run."
Bloomington South advances to the team regional at Greencastle on Thursday evening to take on Franklin Community and Avon faces Perry Meridian with the two winners squaring off for the title beginning at 6 p.m. The individual regional on Saturday at Bloomington South begins at 9 a.m.
