BREAKING: Head-on collision results in fatality

Monday, February 1, 2010

A head-on collision involving two vehicles in the Cory area resulted in the death of one person Monday morning.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., Monday morning, officials were dispatched to an area on County Road 200 South, west of CR 525 W., south of Cory.

According to information provided by Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton, two pick-up trucks hit head-on, killing one of the drivers.

Names of both victims have not been released.

Heaton told The Brazil Times one of the vehicles was driving left of center on the road when the collision took place. He added although an investigation is ongoing, officials believe drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident.

Heaton said one of the drivers was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Coroner Joel Reinoehl.

The other driver -- an 18-year-old -- was airlifted via Air Evac to an Indianapolis hospital. Both victims had to be extricated from their vehicles, according to Heaton.

Also responding to the accident were Clay County Search and Rescue, Lewis Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Perry Township/Cory Volunteer Fire Department, and TransCare.
