UPDATE BREAKING: Accident results in fatality

Monday, February 1, 2010

CORY -- A head-on collision south of Cory resulted in the death of one person Monday morning.

At approximately 7:50 a.m., Monday, officials were dispatched to an area near County Road 200 South, just east of County Road 600 W, south of Cory.

According to information provided by the Clay County Sheriff's Department, Randy E. Pugh, 52, Cory, was traveling east on CR 200 S, in a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup when he collided with Michael D. Barrett, 18, Terre Haute, who was traveling west on the road in a 1995 Dodge truck. Both drivers, according to Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton, had to be extricated from their vehicles.

Pugh was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Coroner Joel Reinoehl.

Barrett was taken to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, via Air Evac.

At press time, the extent of Barrett's injuries were unknown.

Although the accident is still under investigation, Mike Heaton told The Brazil Times it is believed one of the vehicles went left-of-center on the road, causing the collision.

He added officials believe drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident.

Also responding to the accident were Clay County Search and Rescue, Lewis Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Perry Township/Cory Volunteer Fire Department and TransCare.
