Girls high school basketball sectional draws made

The draw for the IHSAA girls' basketball sectionals were made on Monday with teams around the state finding out the path they will need to take through the first state of the postseason.

The Northview Knights were lucky enough to receive the bye in the Class 4A Terre Haute South Sectional that begins on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The opening round of the sectional will feature Terre Haute North (7-12) taking on Terre Haute South (11-9) at 6 p.m. The teams have met twice before this season with the Braves winning both games, 33-30 on Nov. 14 and 37-34 on Jan. 29. The Braves are 3-1 against sectional opponents with the lone loss coming to fourth-ranked Mooresville, 53-39 on Jan. 26. The Patriots meanwhile have posted a 3-3 mark against sectional opponents.

The second game of the opening night will feature Mooresville (20-1 overall) and unbeaten against sectional opponents, taking on Martinsville. The Pioneers own a 73-42 win over the Artesians on Nov. 25.

The Knights will get into action on Friday, Feb. 12 against the winner between the Braves and Patriots at 6 p.m. The Knights have lost 50-36 to the Patriots on Nov. 11 and 62-29 on Dec. 15. Northview also lost to Terre Haute South, 55-46 on Nov. 21. The second game of Friday night will be the winner between Mooresville and Martinsville taking on Plainfield (9-11 overall) at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The Clay City Eels will host their Class A sectional and have a 3-1 mark against sectional foes. However, their first round opponent, North Central is the lone loss back on Dec. 14. The Eels are 11-8 overall heading into last night's regular season finale at South Putnam. The Thunderbirds (9-9 overall) are 3-0 against sectional opponents this season and will face the Eels at 6 p.m. on Feb. 12. The second game that evening will feature a battle between the winner of Tuesday's match-up between Union (4-14 overall) and Shakamak (6-13 overall) and White River Valley. The Wolverines are 2-16 overall this season with one of those victories coming on Dec. 3 against the Bulldogs, 52-50.
