GREENCASTLE -- Clay City's regular season came to an end Tuesday with their 51-38 loss at South Putnam. Brielle Drelick and Carmela Roeschlein led the way with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Clay City game out of the gate struggling from the field and it didn't improve much in the second quarter. The Eels allowed the Eagles to jump out to a 9-1 lead before closing the game to 12-8 after one.
The Eels' shooting woes continued in the second half, as they were 0-for-9 from the field. They were, however, able to convert five points at the charity stripe, and with South Putnam only putting up eight in the quarter, the game was well within reach. The teams entered the break with the Eagles leading 20-13.
The third quarter saw the team trade buckets and entered the final period with South leading by 10 points.
After four quick points from Drelick cut the lead to just six, the Eagles' Brooke Boetjer hit two free throws and then was able to convert a three-point play. Following a technical foul on the Eels head coach Chris Ames, Boetjer tacked on two more points to extend South's lead to 43-30 with 4:50 to play.
That would be all the cushion the Eagles would need.
Clay City continued to charge at South Putnam, but the shots simply would not fall. In the final quarter the Eels shot 30 percent from the field and less than 50 percent at the free throw line.
In addition to Drelick and Roeschlein, Abby Reed scored five points, with Allie Miller and Kelly McCullough adding four apiece. Danielle Gossage and Michaela Riggs chipped in one point each in the loss.
Clay City ends its regular season with a record of 11-9.
