Interest in park benches increasing over time

Originally, George Kumpf planned on purchasing only one park bench to have placed at the Forest Park Band Shell.

However, the idea blossomed and by the end of the month, through donations made by many local residents, Kumpf will be placing a much larger order.

"Right now, what I've got is almost 50 benches," Kumpf told The Brazil Times Wednesday.

In August, Kumpf and others approached the Brazil City Parks Board, pitching the idea to replace the current benches at the band shell with new ones.

For only $500, the benches will be engraved with 28 characters or less, including spaces. Those purchasing a bench will also receive a miniature print of the band shell. The miniature print and a bench are on display at Riddell National Bank.

The benches are made out of recyclable plastic by Barco Products, based in Batavia, Ill.

Kumpf said the first "wave" of park benches will be purchased at the end of this month. Following that, he said benches will be purchased as orders come in. Kumpf said initially, a single bench cost $860. But with so many orders coming in, the company provided the quote.

"I have a quote from the company that is good through February," Kumpf said.

After deciding he wanted to purchase a new bench and dedicate it to his parents, Kumpf said he contacted some former classmates about the possibility of more purchases.

"They all wanted to do this for their parents, too," Kumpf said. "My original idea was I was going to do one for my mom. But I had a pretty good feeling it would take off."

Currently, Kumpf's goal is to purchase 100 new benches for the band shell.

"My concept is to put 100 in at this time and come back and put another 80 in in the future," he said. "But it will be based on how it goes this year.

"The plan is to do the entire band shell."

He said it would take approximately 180 new benches to complete the project.

Kumpf said he hopes to have the new benches installed by June, the beginning of the Brazil Concert Band concert season.

"Everybody really likes the park," Kumpf said. "There's a nice sentimentality about the park and the concerts there. We're well on our way."

Forms are available to purchase a personalized park bench in The Brazil Times. In addition, they may be accessed at www.forestparkbench.blogspot.com or at any Riddell National Bank branch. The purchase is tax deductible.

Those interested in purchasing should fill out a form and send to Riddell National Bank, attn: Kathy White, PO Box 340, Brazil, Ind., 47834. Those paying by check should make it out to Clay Community Park Association and write park bench in the memo or the check.

This is a great idea and I am glad to see it taking off. I hope the new benches will be very well secured to the ground. Unfortunately for our community, the new benches will probably be a target for theft and/or vandalism.
