Shakamak knocks off Clay City

CLAY CITY -- Shakamak's Billy Newton led all scorers with 31 points to lead the Lakers past Clay City, 76-50, Saturday.

With the loss, Clay City dropped to 3-13 overall, including 2-1 in the Tri-River Conference and 2-4 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference.

Newton had 23 points by halftime as the Lakers led 40-18 at the midway point.

Shakamak stormed out of the gates with a 16-4 first-quarter lead.

The Eels outscored Shakamak, 18-16, but could not muster a comeback, as the Lakers outscored Clay City, 20-14, in the final period.

In addition to the 31 points, Newton also had eight rebounds and five steals. Jarred VanHorn also had 12 points and eight board, while John Smith tallied 11 points and 10 assists for the Lakers, ranked eighth in Class A.

A.J. Evans scored 16 points to lead the Eels, while Tyler Bridgewater had 13.

The Eels have lost 12 games in a row.

The Eels will face North Central (Farmersburg) on the road Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m.
