No sense to 'win at all costs'

Monday, February 15, 2010

To the Editor:

I am following up on the response to my letter named by the Times, "Play 'em all."

While I do agree with many of the points made in both letters and respect their opinions, I believe the entire point was missed. At all levels below high school, every sport is a developmental stage.

This means that everyone must learn to play at this stage.

The taxes that we all pay via our home ownership and other methods establish this rule. We shouldn't have to go outside these perimeters to other sources when that's what coaching and teaching is all about.

For example, if Jane is bad in history, do we sit her on the bench and prevent her from learning?

No.

We would step up and find another method of teaching.

At this level, setting the tone, as "win at all costs," just doesn't make sense.

As parents, do we not want our children to have every opportunity? I think that we all do.
