He was born April 26, 1924, in Knightsville, as the son of Jesse Kemper and Opal Northway Irwin. He graduated from Van Buren High School where he had been a member of the basketball team. He married his high school sweetheart, W. Jean Walker on April 24, 1946. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corp in the Pacific Theatre. He worked as a truck driver and operator of Irwin Clay Co., and had worked at Hancor the last 10 years of his career. He was a member of the Knightsville United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife W. Jean Irwin on Oct. 18, 2009, and brothers, Donald, Jesse "Babe," and Robert "Roddy" Leon Irwin.
He is survived by one sister Mary Pruett, one son Johnny K. Irwin (Peggy), Brazil, one daughter Melody Barnhart (Steve), Knightsville, grandchildren Kevin Barnhart (Karla), Tammy Pennington (Eric), P.J. Irwin (Lindsey), and Lacy Irwin and fiancÚ Ben Adams, great grandchildren Riley, Lexy, Erick, Kemper, Arlie, Grady, Chloe, and Benjamin, and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19, at Moore Funeral Home, with Pastor Ernie Rush officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be 11 a.m., until time of services, Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., PO Box 1131, Fairfax VA 22038-1131.
