For the first time in school history, the Clay City High School girls' basketball program celebrated its first sectional title.

On Tuesday, the Eels knocked off Shakamak, 47-37, to claim the Class A Clay City Sectional.

On Saturday, the Eels will travel to Southwestern High School to face Jac-Cen-Del in the first round of the Southwestern (Shelbyville) Regional. Game time is scheduled for 10 a.m. The regional championship game will be played at 8 p.m., Saturday.

"The students are extremely excited," Clay City High School Principal Jeff Bell said. "That feeling last year when the boys won and sectional week and regional week, it's contagious.

"It's carried over this year with the girls. It wets the kids' appetite for success."

According to Bell, maps to get to Southwestern High School are currently available at Clay City High School.

In addition, fan busses will be available for those wishing to attend the game. Those interested in taking the bus should signup at the school office. Cost is $5.

Registration to take fan busses will conclude at 3 p.m., Friday, in order for the school to add or remove busses.

Bell said the fan busses and a "caravan" will leave the school parking lot at 7:15 a.m., Saturday.

He added the team will receive an escort out of town on its way to the regional.

Although the sectional title happened Tuesday, Bell said the school had plans in place if the Eels won, the title, with the regional taking place Saturday.

"You've just got a few days, but you've got to play the hand you're dealt," Bell said. "It would have been nice to have a weeklong celebration, but it is what it is."

Sectional T-shirts are now on sale in the school's main office. Cost is $12.

In addition, regional tickets are on sale in the school office and will be available Friday evening when the Clay City boys' basketball team takes on county rival Northview.

Advance tickets are season passes only, which would allow access to both Saturday regional games and the regional final. Cost is $9. Individual session tickets will be available at the regional site. Cost is $6.

Bell added the school will host a pep rally for the team Friday afternoon, from 1:45-2:15 p.m.
