The North Clay wrestling team got some pivotal bonus points from several wrestlers in a dual match at home Monday night and was able to hold off a spirited challenge from South Putnam, 58-51.

One of the most important and exciting wins of the evening came from Jackson Copper at 120 pounds as he trailed throughout the match, falling behind 12-4 with just seven seconds remaining in his bout with Wes River. However, Copper was able to stay off his back as time ticked down and was able to reverse River and put the Eagle on his back for a scintillating pin at the 3:53 mark.

The victory gave the Knights a little breathing room in the team score and after the Eagles got a pin at 125 from Dakota Bunton to get within 30-27, North Clay made its run.

Kevin Coahran won by pin at 130 in 52 seconds and Brock Dickison followed with a 42-second pin over Will Cruse to extend the lead to 42-27. The Eagles got a pin at 140 pounds before Zach Hyden pinned at 145 in just 27 seconds and Scott McGuffin followed with a win via fall at 155 and the Knights' lead had ballooned to 52-33.

That lead proved to be just enough as South Putnam gained pins at 165 and 180 before Waylon Layne secured the victory with a pin of Joey Masters at 220 to clinch the win.

The match was close throughout as South Putnam fought the Knights tooth-and-nail over the lower weight classes.

Jacob Lorimer earned a win at 75 pounds for the Eagles and the Knights' Cale McCoy got a forfeit win to knot the team score. However, the team's traded wins over the next four classes with Stephen Gibson winning at 85 pounds via fall for the Knights and Terry McGuffin claiming a fall over the Eagles' Matt Parker at 95 pounds. South Putnam won the next two classes with a fall at 100 and a 10-6 decision at 105.

The wins gave the Eagles a tie at 18-all in the team scoring before North Clay got a pin in 1:33 from Trance Kelly and South Putnam scored a 9-0 win at 115 pounds to get within 24-22 to set up Copper's big victory.

North Clay returns home for a Thursday match against South Vermillion at 5:30 p.m.
