City attorney, former judge running for prosecutor

Friday, March 5, 2010

Bob Pell
I am Robert A. Pell, Republican candidate for Prosecuting Attorney of Clay County.

My experience makes me a strong candidate for the office.

I was born and raised in Brazil, and graduated from Brazil High School in 1973. My parents were the late John R. Pell, D.D.S., and Evelyn Pell. I have been married to my wife, Jan, for 21 years.

After graduating from Indiana University in 1977, and IU School of Law at Indianapolis in 1980, I worked as a court bailiff in Miami and practiced law in Hollywood, Fla. I returned to Clay County in 1982 and served for about five years as Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Prosecutor Fritz Modesitt. In those days, that job was not a full-time position, so I also had a private law practice in Brazil. Among my clients were the Harrison Township Trustee and the towns of Harmony and Carbon.

In 1995, Prosecutor David Thomas hired me to prosecute child support and domestic violence cases. In 2003, I was hired as full-time Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, where I served until being appointed Judge of Clay Circuit Court in March 2005.

After my unsuccessful campaign for Judge, I served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Vigo County.

But I'm a Clay County person, so when the opportunity arose to represent the City of Brazil as City Attorney, I returned to private practice in Brazil.

All together, I have been in private practice in Clay County for more than 25 years, have about 15 years of experience as a Deputy Prosecutor and about a year and nine months as Judge.

I have maintained an active role in community service. For many years, I have been a member of Brazil Rotary. I assisted in the formation of, and served on the board of, Habitat for Humanity of Clay County. I am on the Board of Directors of the Clay Community Parks Association, Inc.

For about 12 years, I was Chairman of the Brazil Board of Zoning Appeals and the Brazil Area Plan Commission. I am a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

My work in the community, my law practice and my work in the Prosecutors' offices has given me the experience needed to be Prosecuting Attorney of Clay County.

I will continue to bring a balanced viewpoint and common sense approach to the job.

I will strive to perform my duties impartially and efficiently and to treat people respectfully. I will be tough when it is warranted.

I ask that you entrust me with your vote, so that I may serve Clay County as Prosecuting Attorney.
