The Clay County 4-H Horse and Pony Hippology teams traveled to Sullivan recently for the Area 5 contest. Hippology provides an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of horses and their care. Students are tested through the use of slides, stations, judging and a written exam. Horse Bowl is also another component of the competition. In Horse Bowl, teams compete against each other using buzzers to answer oral questions. Hippology is divided into four categories by grade: Novice (3rd-4th), Junior (5th-6th), Intermediate (7th-8th) and Senior (9th and above). The Clay County Novice team tied for first place in hippology. The Junior team finished in first place with Justine Smith placing first overall individually. The Intermediate team placed second in hippology with Holli Jones finishing second as an individual. Jacqueline Moore finished in second place in the Senior division overall. In Horse Bowl, the Junior team tied for 1st place with Owen County and the Intermediate team won their competition. The teams will be competing at the State Competition at Purdue University on March 27.
