Steven Joe Smith, 45, Brazil, died unexpectedly March 20, 2010, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 3, 1964, in Clay County, the son of James E. Smith and Shirley Johnson Smith.
He had battled juvenile diabetes since the age of 10.
He graduated from Staunton High School and attended Indiana State University. He worked as a counselor for Gibault School in Terre Haute and then later as a correctional officer for the Plainfield Correctional Facility.
He had to retire from working early in the 1980s due to complications from the diabetes.
Steve enjoyed mushroom hunting, bass fishing and being outdoors. He fished in many tournaments in the United States and Canada. As a young man, he also enjoyed music. He was a drummer in "The Cavaliers" drum and bugle corps.
He was preceded in death by his father James Smith.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather Shirley and Marvin Lunsford, Brazil, brothers Jim Smith, Staunton, and Randy Smith, Putnam County, sister Amber Scaife and husband Tomm, Howard, Ohio, stepsisters Sonya Wetnight and husband Rick, and Iris Archer, both of Brazil, special friend Joyce Coleman, several nieces, nephews and other extended family.
At his request, cremation will take place and no services will be held. French Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
