On time property tax billing is back in Clay County.

For the first time since the 2005 pay 06 billing, the first installment of property taxes will be due on Monday, May 10, 2010.

The Clay County Treasurer's Office began printing tax bills Monday, and being back on a routine schedule comes as a relief for Treasurer Debra James.

"I am very relieved to be back on a routine cycle," she told The Brazil Times. "I'm sure the taxpayers will be glad as well to back on the normal schedule."

In addition to the bill itself, taxpayers will also receive a tax comparison statement. Also, those who currently are utilizing the Homestead Credit will receive an additional form.

"Only those who have a Homestead Credit will get a Homestead Verification Form," James said. "The form must be filled out and sent in for those taxpayers to retain the credit."

James added taxpayers receiving the credit have three years to return the form, which will also be sent with the first installment bills in 2011 and 2012. If the form is not returned, the credit will be dropped and take effect on the bills sent out in 2013.

Barring any setbacks or technological issues, James anticipates being able to start mailing property tax bills Monday, April 5.

Like in year's past, the Treasurer's Office will have extended hours in the days leading up to the May 10 collection date for those waiting until the last minute pay their first installment.

More extended hours will available leading up to the Nov. 10 due date for the second installment as well, including:

* May 6,7 and 10 -- 8 a.m.-6 p.m.,

* Saturday, May 8 -- 8 a.m.-noon,

* Nov. 8-10 -- 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and

* Saturday, Nov. 6 -- 8 a.m.-noon.

Property tax payments made at the Treasurer's Office must be either cash or check, but county residents also have the ability to make payments at area banks.

"Payments can be made at all Clay County branches of First Financil Bank and Riddell National Bank, along with the Brazil branch of Terre Haute Savings Bank," James told The Brazil Times. "Property taxes may also be paid online at www.claytax.net.\"

The Clay County Treasurer's Office is located on the first floor of the Clay County Courthouse, and may be contacted at 448-9009 for questions or more information.
