Alberta "Bertie" Joyce Barnette, 70, Brazil, died April 6, 2010, at 11:15 p.m., following a battle with cancer.

She was born Dec. 30, 1939, in Greencastle, to William Earl and Mary Elizabeth (Stuchman) Bemis.

Bertie graduated from Greencastle High School with the class of 1958. Following high school, she began working as a C.N.A. at Greencastle Hospital. She also worked at Clay County Health Center for many years. Bertie was a dedicated caregiver who will be remembered by her patients to be compassionate and caring.

She married Jack B. Barnette in Greencastle at Limedale Baptist Church Oct. 21, 1961. Together, they attended Putnamville Baptist Church before becoming ill. She and Jack later enjoyed watching Christian Television Shows including Les Feldic's Bible Study.

She was a talented artist. She also enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. One of her favorite pastimes included cooking and hosting family gatherings at her home. Her family will remember her as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Jack B. Barnette Jr., siblings Opal Bruner, Wayne Bemis, Clarice Lukenbill, Byron Bemis and baby brother George Bemis.

Survivors include her husband Jack Barnette Sr., Brazil, daughter Lisa Alsip and husband Scott, Brazil, son Brad Barnette and wife Tammy, Greencastle, grandchildren Jessica Barnette, Lucas Alsip, Joshua Alsip, Tyler Stevens, Ashley Stevens, Sophia Barnette and Nicholas Barnette, sister Marlene Lewis, Rockville and brother Donald Bemis, California, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Services will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel Friday April 9, 2010, at 1 p.m., with Scott Alsip officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday from 11 a.m., until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be Hux cancer Center 1606 N. 7th Street Terre Haute, Ind. 47804.
